The Role of the United Nations Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances in Chechnya


As the world marked the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances on 30 August 2014, the fate of thousands of forcibly disappeared persons in Chechnya remains unknown.

It is estimated that over 5,000 people have disappeared in Chechnya since the beginning of the 1999 armed conflict, one for every 200 people of Chechnya’s population. In this article, Mariat Imaeva, EHRAC’s Case and Project Support Officer, looks at how the UN’s working group can provide a new opportunity for those affected.
