The European Court of Human Rights’ Annual Report in 2016

At the end of January 2017, the European Court of Human Rights released its latest Annual Report, alongside its statistics for 2016. The statistics appear to mirror, both in terms of figures and thematic case law trends, the political turbulence that shook Europe last year – one need only think of the attempted coup d’état in Turkey, which led the country to declare a state of emergency and derogate from the European Convention on Human Rights.
