NGO response to the draft Brussels Declaration
Following the high-level conference by the Council of Europe states in Brussels yesterday, six NGOs have submitted a joint response to the draft Declaration on ‘The Implementation of the European Court of Human Rights, Our Joint Responsibility‘. The final draft is due to be adopted today. In it, the NGOs – EHRAC, Open Society Justice Initiative, Amnesty International, The AIRE Centre, Judgment Watch and the International Commission of Jurists – express their regret that the Declaration ‘does not set out the specific measures that states and the Committee of Ministers should take to improve implementation‘. They include ten specific action points to be completed by June 2016.
EHRAC also took part in an official side event, ‘Implementation of Convention Rights and Judgments: The Key Role of NGOs and NHRIs’, at which Prof. Philip Leach and representatives from The AIRE Centre and Open Society Justice Initiatives spoke. The event was attended by about 100 people.
