Georgia

Known as the most promising young democracy in the region, Georgia and its turbulent political and social contexts present a number of complex structural challenges to effective human rights protection. Political instability, deeply entrenched ‘traditional’ societal views, the influential role of the Church, and interstate tensions with Russia over have guided EHRAC’s priorities for strategic litigation.

Together with our Georgian partners, we have successfully litigated precedent-setting cases addressing ill-treatment, torture and deaths in custody, alongside the state’s failure to effectively investigate actions of security forces, violence, attacks and prejudice against women and LGBTIQ+ people, inadequate healthcare in prisons, and conflict and occupation related violations.
