The event, hosted jointly by EHRAC and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/helsinki.org.ua\/en\/\">Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union<\/a>, was targeted at local lawyers bringing cases of human rights violations arising out of the conflict in eastern Ukraine before the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.echr.coe.int\/\">European Court of Human Rights<\/a>.\u00a0 The training session was attended by twenty lawyers, working independently and within NGOs, from all over Ukraine. Over the two days, the group covered a variety of topics including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A step-by-step overview of the European Court process<\/li>\n<li>How to draft applications and pleadings<\/li>\n<li>Issues of evidence<\/li>\n<li>The right to life (Article 2)<\/li>\n<li>Prohibition of torture (Article 3)<\/li>\n<li>Interim measures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The training session concluded with a legal clinic, whereby the participating lawyers were encouraged to discuss specific issues arising from their own caseloads.<\/p>\n<p>All participants also received a number of resources in their training packs, including a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ru.ehrac.org.uk\/resources\/885\/\">Russian-language version<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Witness-statement-guide-online-ENG.pdf\">Witness Statement Preparation Guide<\/a>, the most recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/resources\/ehrac-bulletin-winter-2014\/\">EHRAC bulletin<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edoc.coe.int\/en\/european-convention-on-human-rights\/5618--.html\">Ukrainian-language version<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edoc.coe.int\/en\/european-convention-on-human-rights\/5579-european-convention-on-human-rights.html\">European Convention on Human Rights<\/a>, and a pamphlet in Ukrainian on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eeas.europa.eu\/delegations\/ukraine\/documents\/virtual_library\/association_115x170_en.pdf\">the benefits of the Association Agreement<\/a>, provided by the EC Delegation in Kyiv.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<em>We hope that the training was an opportunity for participants to strengthen their understanding of the practical application of the Convention, and specifically to discuss the legal and procedural challenges in bringing cases arising from the current conflict in Ukraine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>Kate Levine, EHRAC Legal Officer<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>EHRAC and UHHRU collected feedback on the session, which indicated that similar training sessions would be welcomed. All the lawyers envisage using the information gained during the session in their own caseload, with one planning to train up her \u00a0own students on how to use the European Court mechanism.
