The case concerns the disappearance of Zarema Gaysanova, the applicant’s daughter, who at the time was working for the Danish Refugee Council in Grozny. On 31 October 2009 Ms Gaysanova was at her mother’s home in Grozny, when Chechen law enforcement authorities launched a special operation on her street. Her house was shelled and caught fire. One neighbour claimed that they witnessed her being driven away by law enforcement authorities. She has not been seen or heard from since. The investigation into her disappearance has been suspended and resumed a number of times, and is still pending.

The applicant was represented before the ECtHR by EHRAC and Memorial HRC.
