Environmental pollution – supervising the execution of the Fadeyeva judgement

Article

The judgment in the case of Fadeyeva v Russia became final on 30 November 2005. The applicant lives in a council flat situated within the sanitary zone surrounding the Severstal steel plant in Cherepovets. The authorities’ failure to resettle her or take steps to reduce pollution levels was deemed by the ECtHR to constitute a violation of Article 8 ECHR.

As is the case with all judgments, it is the responsibility of the Committee of Ministers to supervise its enforcement. In this case, the Committee of Ministers has decided that the Russian authorities should answer a series of questions to inform the ‘general measures’ to be taken.
