ECtHR Extends Application of Convention Beyond Council of Europe Borders
In two landmark judgements, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) invoked exceptional circumstances to extend the application of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to the UK’s activities in Iraq. Accordingly, the UK was found to have violated Article 2 of the ECHR by failing to investigate the deaths of six Iraqi civilians.
