At risk of extinction: Independent civil society in Azerbaijan
Since August 2014, Azerbaijani civil society has been facing an unprecedented crackdown by the Government, with the detention of several leading human rights defenders and the closure of their organisations. The most recent wave of repression erupted not long after Azerbaijan took over the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers (‘CoM’) of the Council of Europe (‘CoE’), and following the launch of a CoE action plan for Azerbaijan designed to help the country uphold its international obligations.
