Analysis of European Court judgements on Chechnya
Between February 2005 and July 2008 the ECtHR delivered 37 judgements relating to the conflict in Chechnya. All but three of these concerned a breach of Article 2, with a large number also involving breaches of Articles 3, 5 or 13. These cases resulted in the ECtHR awarding damages totalling €2.5million against the Russian Government, although implementation has often been poor and effective investigations have not been ordered.
Nonetheless, Prof. Leach concludes that the judgements have been siginficant in providing some degree of justice. To read more of the analysis, click on the link below.
