Abductions in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions
Hundreds of disappearances and instances of torture and ill-treatment have been recorded in eastern Ukraine since the beginning of 2014. According to Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs, by mid-August, over 1000 individuals had allegedly been detained by armed groups since April 2014, of whom at least 468 are still missing. An increase in this trend has since been reported. A significant pattern of disappearances in Ukraine first emerged during the ‘EuroMaidan’ protests in Kyiv in January 2014, when a number of anti-government protesters were reported missing and several later found dead or bearing conspicuous signs of torture.
