EHRAC signs an open letter against the clampdown on freedom of association in Russia

Published: 9 Oct 2014

On 9 October 2014, EHRAC, along with over 100 other prominent NGOs, signed an open letter with the aim of urging President Vladimir Putin to halt the Russian government’s clampdown on freedom of association. The letter emphasised international concern over the “foreign agents” law, which has seen hundreds of NGOs based in Russia subjected to unannounced inspections, with the consequence of impeding important work. Being branded as a “foreign agent” is tantamount to being branded as a spy; consequently the law has discredited and stigmatised organisations.
