Credit: Getty Images\/AFP<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Five days into January\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/news\/russian-authorities-failed-to-ensure-the-right-to-protest-during-the-6-may-2012-bolotnaya-square-demonstration\/\">we won our first case of the year<\/a>, with a strongly-worded\u00a0judgment from the European Court of Human Rights.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/news\/russian-authorities-failed-to-ensure-the-right-to-protest-during-the-6-may-2012-bolotnaya-square-demonstration\/\">It called on Russia to facilitate protest as an integral part of protecting the fundamental rights to freedom of assembly and expression<\/a>, both of which\u00a0are at the heart of a healthy civil society. The case set the tone for the\u00a0year, as we achieved other precedent-setting decisions from the Court,\u00a0finding that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/?s=&amp;search_tag%5B%5D=azerbaijan&amp;search_tag%5B%5D=human-rights-defenders&amp;search_post_type=0&amp;search_types=1#results\">the treatment of human rights defenders in Azerbaijan<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0unlawful.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/news\/european-court-rasul-jafarovs-arrest-and-detention-were-politically-motivated\/\">Rasul Jafarov<\/a>, Intigam Aliyev and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/news\/azerbaijans-ill-treatment-of-human-rights-defenders-in-the-spotlight-as-it-prepares-to-host-the-formula-1-grand-prix\/\">Leyla and Arif Yunus<\/a>\u00a0were\u00a0all released from prison at the end of 2015 and beginning of 2016 \u2013 they\u00a0are now continuing their human rights activities, and reinvigorating civil\u00a0society in Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n<p>Our cases continue to develop new legal issues and principles, in the\u00a0areas of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/sitewidetags\/womens-rights\/\">gender-based violence and slavery<\/a>, state responsibility in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/sitewidetags\/conflict\/\">conflict\u00a0<\/a>zones, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/news\/european-court-former-georgian-prime-ministers-pre-trial-detention-used-to-exert-pressure-on-him\/\">politically-motivated proceedings against politicians<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/news\/european-court-rasul-jafarovs-arrest-and-detention-were-politically-motivated\/\">human rights defenders<\/a>. Of course, none of our achievements would be\u00a0possible without the unwavering dedication and expertise of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/about-us\/our-team\/our-partner-organisations\/\">our regional partners<\/a>, both long-term \u2013 like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.memohrc.org\/\">Memorial Human Rights Centre<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gyla.ge\/\">Georgian Young Lawyers\u2019 Association<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and newer, including the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/emc.org.ge\/\">Human Rights Education and Monitoring Centre<\/a>\u00a0(Georgia) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinkarmenia.org\/en\/\">Pink Armenia<\/a>.\u00a0We anticipate that our joint litigation with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/helsinki.org.ua\/en\/\">Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union<\/a>\u00a0will lead to the European Court\u2019s first decisions establishing\u00a0the extent of Russian and Ukrainian State responsibility for human rights\u00a0violations during the conflict in\u00a0the Donbas region.<\/p>\n<p>We welcomed new members to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ehrac.wpengine.com\/about-us\/our-team\/\">our team<\/a>, including our first Programme\u00a0Assistant, Sophie Rust \u2013 with 13 staff and consultants EHRAC is now\u00a0the biggest it has ever been! We receive a great deal of support from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdx.ac.uk\/aboutus\/Schools\/law\/index.aspx\">Middlesex University\u2019s School of Law<\/a>, and in December, we moved to a\u00a0new office in a 16th century former farmhouse.
