The three applicants are Russian nationals\u00a0and residents of the Chechen\u00a0Republic. In 2000 the first applicant\u2019s\u00a0brother disappeared and was later found\u00a0dead in the forest near his village of\u00a0Akhkinchu-Barzoy, thought to be as the\u00a0result of an explosion. While searching\u00a0for him, the second applicant\u2019s brother\u00a0was badly injured and died as a result\u00a0of a landmine explosion. The third applicant\u2019s\u00a0son was badly injured and lost\u00a0his leg in similar circumstances. The\u00a0first applicant alleged that his brother\u00a0had been intentionally killed by federal\u00a0servicemen; the other applicants claimed\u00a0that their relatives died or were wounded\u00a0as a result of mines placed in the forest\u00a0by federal servicemen. All the applicants\u00a0claimed that no adequate investigation\u00a0had followed the deaths or injury of their\u00a0relatives. They complained of violations\u00a0of Arts. 2 (right to life) and 13 (effective\u00a0remedy) of the ECHR.<\/p>\n
