\n<\/a>Judgment date: 2 December 2010<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 29 applicants were residents of\u00a0Katyr-Yurt, Chechnya, when Chechen\u00a0fighters captured it in February 2000. In\u00a0response, the federal military assaulted\u00a0the town using aviation bombs, missiles\u00a0and other weaponry. The bombardment\u00a0resulted in the death of 24 of the applicants\u2019\u00a0relatives and injuries to some of the\u00a0applicants.<\/p>\n

Between 2000 and 2001, an official\u00a0criminal investigation was carried out by\u00a0the State in which 11 of the applicants\u00a0were granted victim status. In March\u00a02002 the military prosecutor\u2019s office terminated\u00a0the proceedings upon finding\u00a0that the actions of the federal military\u00a0had been appropriate, proportionate and\u00a0in line with applicable laws. However, it\u00a0was not until 2005 that the applicants\u00a0learnt that the proceedings had been terminated.<\/p>\n
