\n<\/a>Judgments dates: 3 May 2012 and 31 July 2012\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The applicants in Umarovy were\u00a0the sister and father of Mr Umarov\u00a0who, along with two other men, was\u00a0arrested following a search of his flat.\u00a0The two other men were taken away\u00a0for questioning and charged with illegal\u00a0possession of firearms, but Mr\u00a0Umarov was taken away in a separate\u00a0vehicle. His whereabouts remain unknown.\u00a0The applicants alleged that\u00a0the authorities were responsible for\u00a0his death. The Government argued\u00a0that Mr Umarov was a member of a\u00a0radical religious movement, and that\u00a0they had not received any reliable\u00a0information concerning his arrest.\u00a0They suggested that he could be in\u00a0hiding.<\/p>\n

In Shafiyeva, the applicant alleged\u00a0that her husband had been kidnapped\u00a0whilst on his way back from\u00a0dropping off his children at kindergarten.\u00a0His car was allegedly blocked\u00a0by two vehicles without official\u00a0registration numbers, from which\u00a0a group of masked men in camouflage uniforms emerged, hit him\u00a0on the head with a bludgeon, and\u00a0took him away in his own car. The\u00a0abduction was witnessed by several\u00a0local residents, one of whom managed\u00a0to photograph the incident. Mr\u00a0Shafiyev\u2019s whereabouts also remain\u00a0unknown. The Government argued\u00a0that State involvement had not been\u00a0proved, and that the disappearance\u00a0had most likely been staged.<\/p>\n
