\n<\/a>Judgment date: 28 March 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n

The case was brought by seven applicants, one of whom was a minor, who reside in Estonia\u00a0and were part of a Russian speaking minority. They were arrested in April 2007 whilst in\u00a0the vicinity of violent, mass demonstrations\u00a0against the relocation of a monument commemorating\u00a0the entry of the Soviet Red Army\u00a0into Tallinn during the Second World War.\u00a0The demonstrations, involving up to 8000\u00a0people, took place over 4 days in late April\u00a0and degenerated into riots and clashes with\u00a0the police during which, according to official\u00a0sources, 1,160 people were arrested. The\u00a0applicants alleged that they were unlawfully\u00a0arrested and detained overnight during which\u00a0the first, fourth, fifth and seventh applicants\u00a0were subjected to ill treatment at the hands of\u00a0the police, with injuries including abrasions,\u00a0haematomas and a fractured forearm. The\u00a0fourth and seventh applicants were convicted\u00a0of public order offences and no proceedings\u00a0were taken against the other applicants.<\/p>\n
